If You Give an Imp a Penny by Henry, Josh and Harrison Herz; Illustrated by Abigail Larson
“If you give an imp a penny”… there’s no telling what he’ll do, but a kind girl is willing to give him a chance. Like other little creatures, an imp’s good intentions don’t always work out as planned. This leads to twists and turns building up anticipation of imp antics as it goes. After hiding his treasure, he tracks dirt in the house. While cleaning up, he burns up the broom and needs to make a new one.
The illustrations show the child-like enthusiasm of the imp, as he tackles each new challenge and are reminiscent of classic fairy tales of long ago, yet the emotions are relatable even today.
This delightful homage to Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” is a winner if your child prefers something a little bit edgier than the cuddly animals often found in children’s books.
